Battery Comparisons

15 pairs people actually look up, side by side, with the verdict worked out in both directions: a swap that is an upgrade one way round is a downgrade the other.

Coin lithium against coin lithium

Same 3 V chemistry, different case. These come down to the thickness and whether the holder still makes contact.

Watch and button cells, 1.5 V

Silver oxide against alkaline in the same size, and the hearing-aid cell that shares a size with both and replaces neither.

Across chemistries

Pairs where the chemistry, not the size, is the whole question.

Comparing button cells

How do I tell whether two batteries are interchangeable?
Three things have to line up: the diameter, the height and the voltage. If all three match and the chemistry is the same, it is the same cell under another code. If the voltage differs, it is not a replacement at any size.
Are two cells with the same first two digits the same?
No. In a four-digit code the first two digits are the diameter in whole millimetres, rounded down, and the last two are the height in tenths of a millimetre, so CR2032 and CR2016 share a 20 mm face and differ by 1.6 mm of thickness.
Which comparison should I read?
Find the code on your old cell in the list below. 15 pairs are covered, each with the verdict in both directions, because a swap that works one way round does not always work the other.
